1000 Words...The emotions of intramurals

Any other night you couldn’t get a dude on campus to wear a Lady Aggies jersey but this cold January evening in a musty gym with a new floor, there are seven guys doing just that.

They are playing intramural basketball. The teams are made up of a blend of childhood friends, old dorm roommates, people from the same hometown and just people you meet from around the way.

The fans are a mix of girlfriends, waiting players, bored students and old A&T basketball players.

On the court, a close game is turning into a blowout. The Blue Chips are tired. A couple of them are walking up the floor. One player calls a timeout but with no real coaches, they have to the problem out themselves.

The timeout does nothing. The Wildcats, in their own custom jerseys, come in after the timeout and score two easy baskets.

I’m sure Moore Gym has probably seen more entertaining games.

On the other end of the floor, people with huge coats take jumpers and shoot the breeze.

The Blue Chips are down but not out. They’re still hustling. A couple of free throws and jumpers later that still down 17.

Students are decked out as referees and calling phantom fouls.

The Blue Chips have a layup that had the makings of something Jordanesque is blocked. Must not be the shoes money. The crowd laughs at his disappointment.

He makes up for it with a long jumper the next time down but one in the stands is studying Economics, another girl is texting and others are on the phone.

Another jumper later and the lead is 13 but the Wildcats are a well oiled machine and answer right back.

A player on the side stretches his legs ready to go back in the game but its halftime.

The score is 32-16.

The Wildcats are bigger, faster and stronger. They don’t regroup at halftime to go over strategy or take jumpers to stay loose. They chill on the court and patiently wait for the Blue Chips to get it together; The Blue Chips are doing a free throw line and trying to sort out their problems.

The second half begins with the Wildcats missing a breakaway dunk but two offensive rebounds later the lead is 19.

A dude in the a Nikes, straight leg jeans, a vest and hooded sweatshirt paces up and down the sideline, clapping and shouting encouragement.

I ask him is he the coach. He answers with a quiet, “something like that.”

Then he goes back to coach mode and gets on the scorekeeper about not having the score right, shifting his focus back to the team. “That’s what we needed in the first half, we got to drive to the hole.”

The student coach continues, “we got plenty of time boys,” the Blue Chips are down 16…wait make that 18 and he is still living and dying with every blow of the whistle.

They are down 20 now. Hecklers are asking, “What’s up with those tucked in shirts and pulled up shorts, this ain’t boxing!”

The Blue Chips on the bench ignore the clearly audible taunt and call a 3-2 zone on defense. If they are going to lose, they are going to lose with class.

The Wildcats are like machines. One of them gets hit in the groin and eats it.

“Get your shorts out your throat,” yells another heckler from the side, the Wildcats are showboating now. They thrown an alley off the backboard and miss but they the rebound and end up getting an and one. This is just their night.

I asked the coach what he thought was going wrong tonight. “Everybody wasn’t here at the beginning and they not playing physical.”

A ref calls traveling on the Blue Chips after shadow boxing with one of the people on the sidelines. The lead is 26 and the Wildcats aren’t letting up.

Ironically, the Blue Chips haven’t admitted defeat and if they have it doesn’t show. “Push It! Push it!” yells the coach. The lead is down to 22 with a little over five minutes to play.

“Their D ain’t that good,” says one Blue Chip player who is checking his cell phone.

The same hecklers from before ask what the score is…”that’s game!” The “coach” asks what the mercy rule is and the hecklers don’t miss an opportunity to get jokes in. “Keep fighting, don’t give up,” they say holding back smiles.

Less than two minutes to play and down 21, one Blue Chips player still screams, “Man up” which works but they turn the ball over on the other end. A possession later a block and fast break attempt is botched but they do score, then score again, then score once more. A 6-0 run. Maybe it was the new quartet of girls to walk in and mark themselves on the front bleachers.

The Wildcats make subs and misses an alley, the Blue Chips score again. 39-52. “No more passing, no alleys” yells a Wildcat supporter.

Somebody from the sideline yells, “that’s game!” but actually the clock had just messed up. The girl keeping stats tries to explain the situation but the referee just says, “They’re losing anyway.”

Too little, too late for the Blue Chips.

The teams don’t shake hands; they just go to their sidelines and pack up.

Before they go I stop one of the players to ask about the game. “ They were better than us,” says the exhausted player. “Turnovers and rebounds too but it was the first game, everybody was nervous.” “Next game we’ll be straight,” he explains.

The Blue Chips will be back and so will the Wildcats, ready to go through the emotions of an intramural game again. Five minutes later both teams are leaving and two more teams are shooting around, ready to jump into the fire of the game. On a cold Wednesday evening, what else do you have to do?

The soundtrack of my life...

Stolen from Candra who stole it from my inner most thoughts, I present to you the soundtrack of Big Mike (2007).

Opening Credits
- “September" by Earth, Wind & Fire. What can I say? September 25, 1986 the world changed forever nah but seriously “Shaft in Africa” by Johnny Pate. It’s the song “Show Me What You Got” came from, drums are crazy, it sounds kinda epic, so I would want something big like that to introduce me to the world.

Waking Up
- “Touch The Sky" by Kanye West . “I gotta testify/come up in the spot looking extra fly/for the day you die/you gone touch the sky!” No bullshit, I listened to this song almost everyday sophomore year when I got out the shower and brushed my teeth, it was my official “Get ready for school song” plus the Curtis Mayfield sample goes well with that “Shaft In Africa” plus Lupe was on there, you know I bump that.
- “Canned Heat” by Jamiroquai. It’s the song Napoleon danced to in Napoleon Dynamite, corny I know but every time I hear it I smile.
- “Smooth Operator” by Paul Wall. I like hearing this joint in the morning too.
- "Git Up, Git Out" by Outkast. 1994, Southernplayalisticadillacmuizk, that's all I can say.

First Day At School
- "The Spirit" by Skyzoo. Yo, if you don’t know who Skyzoo is GET ON HIM. This song right here is crazy though. My favorite line, “So bow down and acknowledge what my name be, I’m ahead of yall when I jog, we ain’t the same speed. (skip to chorus) Hallelujah, good God almighty, mufuckas that spirit when I’m in it, watch yall get that spirit when I’m it, watch yall get that spirit!”
- "Mr. Me Too" by Clipse. Gotta have Clipse in there somewhere and when I get back to school and see people haven't made moves over the summer or the break I have one question "Fuck yall been doin?"
- "The Bridge Is Over" by Boogie Down Production. Remix it and say THE BREAK OVER! THE BREAK IS OVER! lol that's my song though and I could see this joint with somebody walking into school for the first time that year.

Secret Crush

- “Beauty” by Dru Hill.
- "Can I Take You Home" by Jamie Foxx
- "Excuse Me Miss" by Jay-Z
- "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5? I don't know, I'd have to see how it fits
I can't really think, which is funny because this is common for me.

Falling In Love
- "Lost Without U" by Robin Thicke,. I don’t know I could see this song being in a movie where somebody has love at first sight and then a montage of them falling for that person plays (talking to them for the first time, going out together, yada yada yada)
- “Sunshine” by Lupe Fiasco. Close your eyes, play this track, digest the lyrics, it paints a pretty good picture.
- “Slow It Down" by Little Brother.

Breaking Up

- "Where I Wanna Be" by Donell Jones. Nothing comes close to this song in terms of capturing the vibe of a breakup to me. It has depression written all over it but I still love it.
- “A House Is Not A Home” by Luther Vandross. Big Luther was trying to tell you my life ain’t the same without you here girl!
- I’m not gonna go Lenny Williams, I’ll say “(I Know) I’m Losing You” by The Temptations
- "We're Not Makin Love No More" by Dru Hill. Sad but true...

Getting Back Together
- Reunited and it feels so good, YEA RIGHT! “143” by Musiq Soulchild. That whole Aijuswanaseing was a crazy.
- “Wanna Love U Girl” by Robin Thicke. That’s my joint.
- “Number One” by Pharrell & Kanye West. She must have been number one.
- “Back In Stride Again” by Maze. I don’t know if the song fits but I really like Maze so I had to get them in there.

Amazingly Hot Sex Scene

- “The World Has Too Many Freaks” by Play N Skillz. The intro to this song alone is crazy. Krayzie Bone…“let you know from the gate, I don’t go downtown.” Classic! I don’t know, I guess I could see this being a sex scene with a lot of cuts, No Monster’s Ball shit, I’m going to try and keep it PG-13.
- “What’s Yo Name” by T.I. That’s old T.I., what you know about that? “Now what’s yo name? I’m pussy pumper number one!”
- “Fucking” by David Banner. So obvious, I’m even good with the clean version “Touching”

Making Love
- "You" Raheem DeVaughn. Straight up bruh, if you ain’t already on it, your girl is. You gotta have that Raheem DeVaughn, the Love Experience in your collection.
- “Close The Door” by Teddy Pendergrass. It’s Teddy P man! If you doin’ your thing to Pretty Ricky, Kill yo self! It’s all about Teddy P!
- "The Greatest Sex" by R. Kelly. Classic.

Life's Good
- "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) by Michael Jackson. Y’all don’t know about Thriller.
- "Each Day Gets Better" by John Legend
- “Oh Yes” by Juelz Santana

Fight Song
- I could name Project Pat and Three 6 songs all day but if I had to settle on a couple for the movie…”Roll Wit It” by Three 6 Mafia. “If you boys got beef (We can roll wit it)/In the club or the street (We can go get it)/It don’t make me none (blow for blow with it)/Crack his head wit a gun (I’m a sholl split it!)

Mental Breakdown
- “Stop Fooling Yourself” by Skyzoo. Instantly in my all-time top 10. Get some Skyzoo on your iPod.
- “Heart of the City (Ain’t No Love)" by Jay-Z. The title alone speaks truth, these people don’t care about you, ain’t NO love in the heart of the city.
- “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. “Maybe I’m crazy/maybe you’re crazy/maybe we’re crazy…probably,” this one is kinda obviously.
- “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” by Panic! At The Disco. “I chimed in with a haven’t you people ever heard of closing the God damn door!”

Driving
- “Blow” by Rick Ross. Y’all know I don’t drive
- "Xplosive" by Dr. Dre or any West Coast ridin' kinda music...
- "Shine" by Lil Wayne & Juvenile

Wedding
- “Dontchange” by Musiq Soulchild. A lot of people would go Jagged Edge in this spot but this song says it all.
- "Can't Let Go" by Anthony Hamilton. Gotta have Anthony Hamilton in there. QC all day.

Birth of Child

-"All Blues" by John Coltrane & Miles Davis. Change of pace from the whole film. I think this would capture the moment and add something to it. It’s jazz that’s upbeat and just all improvised man, so it being all over the place would describe my emotions. You know when you hear the horns something epic is coming and the second edition of Big Mike would be CRAZY!

Dramatic Climax Scene/Dénouement
- “Still Dreaming” by Nas. This plays off the song before, real smooth. “Some dreams stay dreams, some dreams come true” meaning that right now it could go either way. Sad part is if we follow this script I die young (not a fan). Get the album Hip Hop Is Dead if you haven’t already!

Traditional Death Scene
- I was gonna say “Numb” by Linkin Park but that makes it seem like I would kill myself and we all know that is out of the question so I’d have to go with “Bury Me A G” by Young Jeezy. Even though I ain’t got no Evisu jeans, a USDA chain or a throwaway glock

Funeral Song
I’ll Fly Away.
“Some glad morning when this life is over, I'll fly away,
To a land where joy shall never end, I'll fly away.
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).”

"The Funeral" by Clipse. It fits.

End Credits
- "I Made It" by Jay-Z. It’s so fitting, because in the end WE ALL KNOW, Mike McCray is gonna make it.

I hate I don't have more Outkast, Little Brother and some of my other favorite groups but hey, here it is. Tell me what you think? 40 tracks of heat to me, what would yours look like?

Cuervo & Coronas

10:45 PM, December 31, 2006 I thought my New Year’s plans had died. I was all dressed up with nowhere to go, sitting on the trunk of my pops car texting random New Year’s messages to my acquaintances. Finally, The Mota Family came through.

So we headed downtown looking for a spot to ring in the New Year, time passed as we thought about different spots that would be good and around 11:40 we decided on the Westin. So, we get in there. Go straight to the bar. Dude Bernardo got some Coronas and got me a Cuervo and we took pictures and killed the last couple minutes of 2006. People were handing out champagne flutes, everybody was getting in their places, counting down BOOM! Happy New Year! People hugging and kissing all around and an old white woman was drunk a gave me a hug like we were old friends or family. It made me think man, 30-40 years ago that would have NEVER happened.

So after that, the group headed to the Marriott, where basically the "hood" party downtown was going to be. I mean all you saw in line to get in were dudes with dreads, wearing hoodies and sunglasses, I mean it was almost creepy how they all dressed alike. We were supposed to get in free and we would have if I was 21, so the compromise to get my under 21 ass in the club was to pay $20, which wasn't bad but for a party I knew I wouldn't enjoy, I didn't want to fuck with it.
But I did get to see a drunk white lady fall in the hallway while we were there, so that was pretty good.

So we headed to The Morehead Tavern and that was pretty good. Other than it being a million big girls it was a good lil spot that I would have never gone too. I had more drinks there and tried to act like I didn't know somebody I've known since 6th grade and tried not to have to fight a dyke I got Corona on. All and all though, a good night. Got to see my nig Akea Mc happy, got to laugh at niggas in courduroy blazers buying girls drinks (that nigga must be stupid), got to see white people fight at the bar. I mean it was good, and the DJ didn't get outrageous with his song selection.

I got home that night and couldn't sleep so I watched some movies and then started reading The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama, so far so good with that. If you're a person who reads a lot you might want to scoop it.

I'm back in Greensboro now and basically neglecting my responsibilities just trying to get back in the swing of school, unlike some people who can show up a day or two before classes and be good, I need a little more time so I tried to do something productive with myself today. I cooked, wash clothes, went to the office and did a little work.

I'm especially proud of how QC is deep in the Orange Bowl tonight. You got Kenny playing running back for Wake Forest, my West Charlotte people Rod (starting at corner) and Trent (returning kicks) playing for Louisville, not to mention all the Charlotte people I don't know who are the Wake Forest team. It's crazy to see people you had class with in high school doing big things but I want to wish them much more success in the future.

Anybody else remember how bad I wanted to go to Wake a couple years ago, I knew something special was brewing but at the end of the day, IT AIN'T A&T SO IT AIN'T SH*T!

Be easy yall, I'm going to be writing a lot more this year and trust me all of it won't just be what I did and ate that day...
